First Semiquincentennial Liberty Tree Dedication: Little Compton

First Semiquincentennial Liberty Tree Plantings in Rhode Island

Join us as we mark an important milestone in Rhode Island’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution with the planting of the state’s very first Liberty Trees.

Inspired by the original Liberty Trees of the 18th century—rallying points for colonists who gathered to debate, organize, and envision a new nation—these plantings symbolize the enduring values of freedom, unity, and civic engagement.

The ceremonies will include remarks from local leaders, brief historical reflections on the significance of Liberty Trees, and a dedication of the young trees as living memorials to Rhode Island’s role in the founding of our nation. Each planting is not only a nod to the past, but also a legacy for future generations who will one day gather under their branches.

We invite community members, students, families, and history enthusiasts to be part of this moment as Rhode Island roots its commemoration of the Semiquincentennial in the living landscape of our towns and cities.

To celebrate the Town’s 350th Anniversary this year, the Little Compton Community Center is adding a historic twist to their Annual Summer Art Show.

A Retrospective Exhibit of works by noted artists who had a Little Compton connection will be featured.  Gathered from private collections, works by David Aldrich, Debbie Bodington, Sydney Burleigh, C. Gordon Harris, Molly Luce, Mary Elizabeth Post, Lloyd Parsons, and others, all on loan from private collections will be on exhibit.

Going to the Gala? Friday, July 18th, 5:30 – 8:00 pm. (Admission $150 per individual, $250 per couple)

An Opening Night Gala featuring a LIVE auction with works from both retrospective artists and current artists will go under Mike Corcoran’s gavel. Attire from any era is encouraged: straw hats, bow ties, go-go boots, feather boas, love beads, poodle skirts… We aim for this to be a fun evening with a few quirky surprises.

The Retrospective will be open to the public free of charge on Saturday, July 19, 10am - 4 pm, and
Sunday, July 20, 10am - 1pm. It will be a stop on the LC350th Sunday Scavenger Hunt.
